Eyes And Critical Illness Cover

August 11th, 2011

The eye is a complex part of our body and our eyes are susceptible to infection. Our eyelids are there as protective shield as we can end up with a number of things in our eyes such as insects, dust an eyelash all of which can cause an infection and leave us with temporary loss of sight until fully recovered and they can cause us great pain. It is also possible for people to suffer from conjunctivitis, which then means that you eye will start to leak and will take a few days to clear with the correct medication.

For many people they can become long or short sighted as they become older and there a number of reason why this can occur due to the refraction of light rays. Other illnesses which your eye can suffer from are styles which are also fairly common but are more likely to happen when someone is feeling run down. We need to be very careful with our eyes as we can take them for granted because we may never consider what we would if we did not have our vision to carry on with our normal daily activities. For example some occupations put you at a higher risk of causing some damage to your eye, if you were to work in a metal factory then you need to ensure you use the correct safety gear such as goggles so that no fragments end up in your eye.

A condition to the eye which may be hereditary is glaucoma, if you mum and dad suffered then it may be more likely that you will develop such an illness, as it can mean you will have reduced vision due to the build up of pressure. There are a number of precautions you can take to reduce the risk of your eye sight getting any worse, for example have regular eye check ups, so that if you need to wear glasses you can get them as soon as possible so you are not putting a strain on your eye. If you feel you need to use eye drops for whatever reason it would be advisable to consult your doctor or chemist first to make sure that they are suitable for your eyes.

If you were to get something in your eye then you would need to try and wash it out with water, but be careful to not get anything else in your eye in the process. If you were to loose your sight then you may become disabled as you will not be able to look after yourself the way you use to however this does not mean that you are critically ill, you just may need extra support at home. If you were to have previously taken out a contract such as a Critical Illness Cover and you were to become blind a few years later you would typically not need to inform your insurance provider as they underwrite you at the time of the application and therefore there would be no change to your plan if you were to suffer a critical illness.
